DCU Organisations that Inform Us

As a university campus with more than 16,000 students, DCU needs to keep its student body updated and informed of ongoing affairs relating to their tuition. One major current issue is that of college tuition fees, and how they may change in the near future. In terms of student organisations, DCU is politically active: Young Fianna Fáil and Young Fine Gael are two student-run societies, and perhaps they could inform their peers of the current fees system in Ireland, as well as what changes have been proposed by the government. Aside from these, DCU has a Fees Office. This could potentially post information regarding current fees affairs so as to keep the student body informed, but it doesn’t. Other resources that could link the student body with information about student fees include DCUSU and student-run newspaper the College View. DCUSU was very involved in the recent march against student fees, such as holding a social media competition whereby sharing a video about the student march would give the user a chance at winning a ticket to their Halloween ball. The College View has posted articles relating to the march, such as the figures who spoke at it, and events occurring leading up to the protest.
There are some obvious resources available on campus for DCU students who want to learn more about the current fees situation in Ireland, as well as what could happen in the future. However, many of the students that our team interviewed stated that they believed they hadn’t personally come into contact with such resources. Our objective is to bring as much information regarding this issue to students of DCU, through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, so that those students can form (and voice!) their own opinions.
Have a look at some of our interviews with DCU students on what they currently know, and feel, about the issue of college tuition fees in Ireland.
